Hi everyone.

As you begin planting your crops, plant early corn (65-72 days) in the north patch and the sweet corn (80 + days)is the patch closest to Wellesley.  Eldon is unloading irrigation pipe that was donated by a wonderful family in Newman Lake today around 2:30pm and I’ll be there if you have any questions for either one of us.

• The forecast shows lows to be above freezing for the next 10 days and the highs are into the low 60’s to 70’s!  This will warm the soil and keep heavy frosts away!  All the stakes are marked for planting.  The crop is written on the stake unless it says open.  Open rows are for you to plant whatever doesn't go in the designated crop areas.  Just be sure to mark your row with your name so that someone else doesn't harvest your crop by mistake!
• Our wonderful maintenance guys will finish the 7' chain link fence to the north of the raised beds!  The rest of the fencing is underway and with the help of high school students on Thursday, we hope to have all fencing completed by the end of the day.  Irrigation will also start this week and hopefully be completed within the week.  Until then, you can transport water to your beds from home; save your gallon milk containers or 2 liter bottles and fill them with water.
• The creativity of our gardeners is showing in the way you are separating your plots in the beds.  The use of rocks looks great and makes a lot of sense given the rock piles we have around.  Feel free to use the rocks!  As this is the first year for our garden, we are evaluating how we do things all the time so that next year we can make improvements.  As the season unfolds, there will be many things that we can improve upon.  We welcome your suggestions!
• PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY SORT OF WEED AND FEED PRODUCT!!!  Vegetables will not survive even an accidental overspray and the school district has to be in compliance with chemical standards for weed killer.  Fertilizer is ok to use, just be sure that your neighbors in your bed know what you are using and that you keep the fertilizer contained to your bed as much as possible.

The East Valley Farms and Schools Partnership have created an exciting opportunity to help the community members and students of the East Valley School District understand the complexities of farming and gardening while building unity among community members. We feel the scope of our community garden is limited only by our imagination and determination. Not only will classrooms have this opportunity, but all community members. Families are the backbone of our schools and when families are supported in investing time with each other then families can be more successful. Grandparents, neighbors and students alike can come together and grow together through gardening.
