Maintenance Dept Overview

The Maintenance Department maintains the patron’s investment in quality educational buildings by providing a safe comfortable and efficient learning environment for our students, parents, faculty and staff.  All school buildings comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

We work behind the scenes to service, maintain and repair the mechanical, electrical, structural and architectural components of the educational process.  We work as a team to ensure the smooth operation of eight schools and four support/administration buildings in the East Valley School District through the numerous work order requests received on a daily basis.

Energy Conservation will save the school district many thousands of dollars in time.  Saving energy also protects our environment and conserves our natural resources. Energy savings is occurring through our Preventative Maintenance (PM) program, our Energy Committee, and our computerized building controls system.  Routinely lubricating machinery, changing filters, cleaning coils and checking and replacing belts achieve money savings. The automated control system is used to manage networked heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems at our district facilities.  These systems are controlled through centralized computer monitoring.   We can remotely program temperatures, turn systems off during unoccupied hours, and pre-program schedules for holidays and special events

Our Energy Committee was instrumental in instigating the lighting upgrades at all of our facilities, and new boilers at Skyview, East Valley Middle School, Otis Orchards, and East Valley High School.  They were also instrumental in acquiring a new chiller for East Farms.  If you are interested in serving on this committee, please contact the maintenance office at (509) 927-3206.

Several levels of planning are involved in running the maintenance operations.  Our work is governed by a master plan for all facilities and grounds, a preventative maintenance plan, an energy plan, and a long range facility planning committee.

East Valley Grounds

Our grounds crew provides care for beautification of all grounds around the districts’ buildings, athletic fields and playgrounds.  This encompasses 310 developed acres and 72 undeveloped acres of East Valley School District.  The responsibilities of our grounds crew includes: mowing, edging, aerating, fertilizing, weed control, removal of organic debris and litter, pest control, and maintaining our irrigation systems.  The crew is also responsible for the maintenance of snow blowers, lawnmowers, trimmers, weed eaters and other grounds keeping equipment.

Custodial

Our custodial staff works hard to ensure a clean, safe and healthy environment for students, staff and the patrons of EVSD.  They maintain a total of over 403,302 square feet of interior space the school district owns and operates.  Each custodian is responsible for maintaining in excess of 16,000 square feet of space per day!  Not only do these individuals perform the routine day-to-day cleaning, but they also do project work such as stripping, waxing and buffing of vinyl and concrete floors, stain removal and shampooing of carpets, furniture relocation, snow and ice removal, and numerous other tasks in support of the educational staff and community.  The building custodians also provide services for after-school community activities (adult education, recreational, social and civic activities, etc).  A copy of the Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for any maintenance products used in the buildings is maintained in each building and is available for inspection.

Safety Notices

Asbestos
All buildings have been inspected for asbestos and other requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  The district’s asbestos management program (AHERA) has been in place since 1988 and consists of surveillance, inspections, response actions, records and training for maintenance and custodial staff.

Playgrounds
Otis Orchards Elementary and Skyview Elementary were recently renovated to provide a playground that is ADA compliant.  A Certified Playground Inspector on our staff performs periodic inspections, and our custodial staff is required to perform a weekly inspection to ensure a safe playground environment for all children.
